WHAT I TREAT

WHY PARENTS REACH OUT TO ME
Worried, Burned Out & Unsure How To Help Your Teen? You’re Not Alone!
If you’re here, it’s likely because you’ve been carrying the weight of your teen’s struggles for a long time. You’re tired, scared, and wondering what else you can possibly do to help them get better. Maybe your child is pulling away, refusing help or spiraling emotionally, and nothing you say seems to make a difference. You might lie awake worrying about their safety, their future, or whether you’ve somehow missed the signs that something deeper is going on. You’re constantly trying to strike the right balance between giving space and staying involved.
Many parents I work with feel helpless watching their child suffer — especially when school, friendships or family life start to unravel. Juggling your usual responsibilities alongside their care can be exhausting. Especially if you’re constantly walking on eggshells at home. You might also be dealing with burnout, sleep issues, or your own mental health struggles that no one seems to see.
It’s completely natural to fear the worst: that your child won’t be okay or that they’ll never fully thrive. Maybe you’re scared of the side effects of medication… or of what might happen if you don’t try it. Maybe you're just hoping for someone trustworthy who understands how complex and fragile this stage of life really is.
You don’t have to carry this alone!
Working with a psychiatric provider who genuinely cares and who knows how to meet teens where they are can feel like a massive relief for parents. I help teens feel safe, heard and respected, while keeping parents supported and involved in a way that builds trust rather than conflict. Together, we’ll work toward stabilizing symptoms, improving communication and creating a more peaceful path forward – for you, your child and your family.

Holistic Guidance & Therapy Referrals
Medication Tapering & Discontinuation

Your child’s first sessions include a thoughtful, collaborative evaluation where we explore what they’ve been going through, emotionally, socially, and physically. This isn’t just about checking boxes or slapping on a label. It’s about understanding the full picture so we can create a care plan that actually fits their symptoms and needs.
If medication is part of the plan, we’ll take a slow, careful approach. That means starting with the lowest effective dose, involving both teen and parent in the decision-making process, and focusing on comfort and clarity every step of the way. You and your teen will never be rushed or pressured into something you’re not comfortable with.
Once treatment begins, we’ll meet regularly to check in on how things are going. These sessions offer a space to talk through changes, ask questions, refill prescriptions, and make adjustments as needed. Your child won’t be passed around between providers or left to deal with unattended side effects – I stay involved at all times.
There’s more to feeling better than just medication. I offer gentle guidance around sleep, stress, school routines, and emotional tools your teen can actually use in daily life. We can also discuss therapy referrals or integrate mindfulness strategies if it feels appropriate – always based on your teen’s willingness.
If your teen is already on medication and you’re wondering whether it’s still needed, we can talk about tapering. I approach medication changes gradually and safely, based on how your teen is feeling and not just a deadline. Parents stay informed, and teens stay empowered, every step of the way.

MY APPROACH TO CARE
Whole-Person Mental Health Care
Built on Trust – Not Just Treatment Plans
At Out West Mental Health, I believe good care starts with a real relationship built on trust. Many teens come in feeling unsure, carrying past disappointments or worried about being judged. That’s why I center every conversation around real connection so your teen feels seen, respected and never rushed. Whether they’re navigating a new diagnosis, thinking about medication or just trying to get through a tough day, I meet them with warmth, curiosity and zero pressure.
This is a different kind of psychiatry – one that blends proven treatments with genuine listening and a personal touch. I’m the only provider your teen will see, handling every part of their care myself. That might mean a thoughtful talk about medication, a check-in when life feels overwhelming or even a birthday card to remind them someone cares. Teens often say it feels more like talking to a trusted friend or family doctor than a distant provider behind a screen.
I tell every new teen client that I’ll never push treatment that doesn’t feel right or prescribe something I wouldn’t recommend to someone I love. Instead, we’ll work together to build a plan that helps your teen feel more like themselves again. This care is designed for their whole life – not just their symptoms – and is grounded in values that feel honest, kind, and local.

Sommer is the best provider I have ever had! I've been with her for a year and a half. I can't express how grateful I am to have found her. I've had so many providers dismiss how I actually feel and what management is best for me. I gave up hope that I would ever find someone that really has the desire to understand each individual person and what management applies to them. She's someone you can trust with yourself and know that she is going to provide you with the best care and professional guidance. You'll get this feeling the second you meet her. I've never had a provider be so genuinely invested in me and so accessible/easy to reach. She also recommended me to the best therapist I've ever had! So she is a crucial part to the growth and happiness I have today that I never thought I'd find. You'll regret not seeing her!

I’ve been battling focus, procrastination, and time management for years, feeling like I was constantly falling behind. But then I met Sommer Perkins, and everything changed. From the very first appointment, I felt truly heard, understood, and supported. Sommer took the time to listen to my concerns and ask thoughtful questions, making me feel like a priority rather than just another patient. One of my biggest concerns was finding the right approach without dealing with unwanted side effects. Sommer was incredibly patient, making small adjustments and following up regularly to ensure I was feeling my best. Whether you need support with focus or organization, Sommer takes a personalized approach rather than a one-size-fits-all method. I finally feel more in control of my life again! As someone with a busy schedule, I love that Sommer offers telehealth appointments, making it so much easier to get the care I need.

What kind of medications do you prescribe to teens?
I commonly prescribe antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, sleep aids, mood stabilizers, and occasionally stimulants or antipsychotic medications when appropriate. I generally avoid high-risk medications that require intensive lab monitoring, unless you’re already stable on them. Controlled substances may be continued if you're already on a safe, effective dose but new prescriptions are considered carefully on a case-by-case basis. I’ll always work with you (and your primary care provider) to ensure your medication plan is safe, informed and supportive of your long-term health.
Do you offer crisis services?
I don’t provide crisis or emergency care. As a telemedicine service, I am unable to treat patients with complex mental health issues such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, substance abuse or eating disorders. If your child is experiencing intense distress, active suicidal thoughts or needs immediate help, please call 911, go to the nearest clinic or ER, or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
What is your cancellation policy?
Life happens and I understand that sometimes plans change unexpectedly. You’re welcome to cancel or reschedule up to 3 hours before your appointment with no charge. If you cancel within that 3-hour window, fees apply: $25 for the first late cancellation, $50 for the second and $100 for the third, which may also result in discharge from care. If you’re more than 10 minutes late, your appointment will be marked as a no-show and the same fees above will apply. These fees help protect time for all clients who need support. Thanks for honoring your appointment time – it allows me to offer consistent, thoughtful care for everyone.
